Third Sunday of Advent / Troisieme dimanche de l'Avent

English:  This Sunday is Gaudate Sunday.  "Gaudate" calls us to rejoice.  We rejoice at the coming of Our Lord.  We anticipate the Nativity as we prepare for Christmas.  We look to the words of St Paul in today's epistle.  Paul says "Rejoice in the Lord!" and "The Lord is near!"

And the Gospel continues with the theme as John the Baptist explains what he is doing.  He was announcing the coming of Jesus.  Jesus,  whose sandals he wasn't worthy to untie....

They asked John the Baptist, "Who are you?" and John told them who he was.  John defined himself entirely in terms of his relationship to Jesus and his ministry for Jesus.  Why not ask yourself the same question and frame your answer in similar terms?  Who are you?  And how does Jesus figure in who you are?

Madonna and Child with St. John the Baptist and Saint by Giovanni Bellini,  c. 1500-1504.

Second Sunday of Advent / Deuxieme Dimanche de l'Avent

Deutsch  / Français / English / Polskie / Português:

English: Today we are at the 2nd Sunday of Advent and the Gospel acts as a bridge between the "Old Testament" and the "New Testament".   John the Baptist sends his disciples to ask Jesus whether He is the One Who is to come...why did John instruct his followers to ask this question?  He knew that Jesus was the One!  John wanted his followers to find out for themselves...a truth revealed is far better than a truth that is simply taught.  Similarly,  Jesus does not just tell John`s followers that He is the One...No,  He wants them to discern it for themselves and so He makes them think about what they can see - the  blind see, the lame walk....they would immediately have thought of Isaiah 35:5.  They would understand that Jesus was the Messiah foretold by the Prophets.

During this Advent, we must use this time to prepare for the coming of Our Lord, the Redeemer of the world.

Jean-Baptiste (Carlo Crivelli 1476)
