English: Fr Adolphus preached on the subject of the Gospel. Jesus heals a man on the Sabbath (Luke 14:1-11). Elsewhere in the Gospels we find Jesus saying " The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath" (Mark 2:27). We must bear this in mind when we consider laws more generally. We must not be too legalistic when this prevents us from love. As St Paul says in his epistle today (Ephesians 3:17), we are to be rooted and grounded in love. But let us be very clear on this point - when we talk about love, we talk about love of God, not just any feeling or popular idea of love. True love is not really love if it does not act in a way that glorifies God. When Jesus cured the man on the Sabbath, the miracle displayed the Glory of God, the Great Love of God.
And we must always ask ourselves whether what we are doing acts towards glorifying God. If it doesn`t then we should not do it! This is not always easy, but it is what a Christian must do.
Consider what St Paul says " I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day" (2 Timothy 4:7-8). Can we really say from our heart that we have fought the good fight? Are we on track to finishing the race and are we really keeping the faith? But we must do so if we are to receive the reward from God. And we must not be disheartened in this task. This is also the message from today`s epistle from St Paul - and we must pray to the Lord Jesus for His help.

Français : Père Adolphus prêché sur le sujet de l'Évangile. Jésus guérit un homme le jour du sabbat (Luc 14: 1-11). Ailleurs, dans les Évangiles, nous trouvons Jésus disant: «Le sabbat a été fait pour l'homme, et non l'homme pour le sabbat» (Marc 2:27). Nous devons garder cela à l'esprit lorsque l'on considère les lois en général. Nous ne devons pas être trop légaliste quand cela nous empêche d'amour. Comme dit saint Paul dans son épître aujourd'hui (Ephésiens 3:17), nous sommes à être enracinés et solidement fondés dans l'amour. Mais soyons très clairs sur ce point - quand on parle de l'amour, nous parlons de l'amour de Dieu, et pas seulement un sentiment ou une idée populaire de l'amour. Le véritable amour n'est pas vraiment de l'amour si elle n'agit pas d'une manière qui glorifie Dieu. Quand Jésus guérit l'homme le jour du sabbat, le miracle a fait clairement apparaître la gloire de Dieu, le grand amour de Dieu.
Et nous devons toujours nous demander si ce que nous faisons glorifie Dieu. Si non, alors nous ne devrions pas le faire! Ce n'est pas toujours facile, mais c'est ce que le chrétien doit faire.
Pensez à ce que dit saint Paul: «J'ai combattu le bon combat, j'ai achevé la course, j'ai gardé la foi. Désormais la couronne de justice m'est réservée; le Seigneur, le juste juge, me le donnera dans ce jour-là» (2 Timothée 4: 7-8). Pouvons-nous vraiment dire du fond du cœur que nous avons combattu le bon combat? Sommes-nous sur la bonne voie pour terminer la course? et nous nous tenons vraiment la foi? Mais nous devons le faire si nous voulons recevoir la récompense de Dieu. Et nous ne devons pas être découragés dans cette tâche. C'est aussi le message de l'épître de St Paul aujourd'hui - et nous devons prier le Seigneur Jésus pour son aide.
