Messe 18 Mai

Fourth Sunday after Easter / Le quatrième dimanche après Paques:

English:  Fr Adolphus preached on the Gospel reading for today ( in Luxembourg it is the Mass for the Luxembourg Octave Celebration of Our Lady).

The Gospel concerns those standing at the foot of the cross (John 19:25).

Firstly, we must recognise that women are very important to the story of salvation.  They are there on the way to Golgotha.  In today's Gospel, they are there again at the crucifixion.  Later on, they are there at the tomb and witness to the Risen Christ.  We look especially at Mary, Mother of Our Lord, who is there throughout.  We are told (Luke 2:19) that Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her Heart.

Secondly, Jesus sees John and Mary at the crucifixion.  Mary is to treat John as her son. John is to treat Mary as his Mother.  Tradition tells us that they cared for one another in Ephesus in modern day Turkey.

As followers of Christ, we identify with John.  Therefore we must treat Our Lady as our mother.  Do we do this?  She is the Queen of Heaven, she will intercede for us.  We must call on Our Blessed Mother during our own difficulties.  Do we call her?  When we hear of things in this world, like in Syria and Nigeria, do we ask her to intercede?

Of the apostles, only John was present at the crucifixion.  The other apostles had turned on their heels. But what of us?  Are we standing at the foot of the cross?  Does Jesus see us there or are we somewhere else?

Next week, Mass will be said for the soul of Abbé Robert Sibenaler who died last year on 23rd May.

The Crucifixion, with the Virgin
and Saint John the Evangelist Mourning
